Description

Great camass (Camassia leichtlinii) is a striking, upright perennial known for its tall spires of star-shaped blue to violet flowers that bloom in succession from bottom to top. Its robust clumps of grassy foliage and impressive flowering display make it a popular choice for naturalized meadows, rain gardens, and mixed borders where spring drama is welcome. It tolerates moist soils better than many spring bulbs and can persist for decades in suitable conditions.

Native to western North America, especially moist meadows, streambanks, and open woodlands from British Columbia to California, C. leichtlinii thrives in seasonally wet sites that dry out by midsummer. Indigenous peoples traditionally harvested its bulbs, which were roasted or pit-cooked, though it’s essential to distinguish it from toxic Zigadenus species.
