Description

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a vigorous native vine known for its five-petaled leaflets, rapid growth, and brilliant red fall color. Often used to cover trellises, fences, or walls, it clings via adhesive-tipped tendrils rather than penetrating roots, making it gentler on masonry than true ivy. Though flowers are inconspicuous, they give way to small blue-black berries that support native birds. Its adaptability and tolerance to sun or shade make it a versatile choice in both designed landscapes and naturalized settings.

Native to eastern and central North America, Parthenocissus quinquefolia grows in woodlands, rocky slopes. and disturbed areas. It’s valued by gardeners for erosion control and habitat support.
