Description

‘Hicksii’ yew is a widely used hybrid cultivar, developed by crossing English yew (Taxus baccata) with Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata). It produces a dense, upright form ideal for clipped hedges and formal screening. Compared to other T. x media cultivars, ‘Hicksii’ is taller and narrower, with fine-textured foliage and strong tolerance for pruning. Its adaptability and year-round evergreen structure make it a staple in traditional garden design.

As a hybrid, ‘Hicksii’ is not found in the wild but inherits traits from its Eurasian and East Asain parent species. It prefers cool climates, partial shade to full sun, and moist, well-drained soil. In poorly drained or excessively hot locations, it may decline or become susceptible to root rot.
