Description
Monstera deliciosa is a large, evergreen climbing plant native to the tropical forests of southern Mexico and Central America. In its natural habitat, it uses aerial roots to anchor itself to tree trunks, climbing toward the canopy while its large, glossy leaves develop characteristic splits and perforations. These fenestrations are thought to increase light capture and reduce wind damage in its rainforest environment. Mature plants produce creamy-white, hooded flowers and edible fruit with a flavor reminiscent of pineapple and banana—hence the species name deliciosa.
In cultivation, Monstera deliciosa thrives in bright, indirect light and a loose, organic-rich growing medium. It benefits from high humidity and support structures that mimic its natural climbing habit. While commonly grown as a houseplant in cooler regions, in frost-free climates it can reach impressive sizes outdoors.
