Description
Sweet autumn clematis (Clematis terniflora) is a vigorous, twining vine native to Japan and parts of East Asia, valued for its profusion of fragrant white flowers that bloom late in the growing season. The airy, star-shaped blossoms attract butterflies and bees, while the dense foliage provides screening or vertical interest on trellises, arbors, or fences. In favorable conditions, it can grow 20 feet or more in a single season.
Though admired in gardens for its lush display and ease of cultivation, this species has naturalized and become invasive in parts of the eastern United States. Gardeners are advised to prune it hard in late winter and deadhead spent flowers to prevent unwanted spread.
