Description
Silver Falls dichondra is a trailing perennial native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, often grown as an annual in cooler climates. The cultivar ‘Silver Falls’ is prized for its cascading stems of rounded, silver-gray leaves that shimmer in the sun and spill elegantly from containers, walls, and hanging baskets. Drought-tolerant and heat-loving, it prefers full sun and well-drained soils, making it a favorite for xeriscaping and modern container gardening. While it produces small, inconspicuous flowers, its foliage provides the main ornamental appeal.
This cultivar thrives in USDA Zones 9–11 but can be overwintered indoors in colder climates. Its reflective leaves help reduce water loss and heat stress, a trait that is adaptive for its native arid environments. Although not invasive, it roots at the nodes and can spread readily under favorable conditions.
