Description

Siberian bugloss is a clump-forming, shade-tolerant perennial prized for its heart-shaped leaves and blue flowers reminiscent of forget-me-nots. Native to the woodlands of the Caucasus and western Siberia, it thrives in moist, humus-rich soils with partial to full shade. Cultivars with silver-patterned foliage such as ‘Jack Frost’ and ‘Looking Glass’ are especially valued for brightening darker garden areas long after the spring bloom fades. It is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8 and makes an excellent groundcover beneath shrubs or along woodland paths, where its foliage forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat.

Brunnera is both deer-resistant and relatively low-maintenance once established. The early bloom period provides one of the first nectar sources for awakening pollinators in shady settings. Its deep roots allow it to tolerate brief dry spells, though consistent moisture yields the best foliage display.
