Description

‘Ruby Falls’ is a compact, weeping cultivar of the native eastern redbud, notable for its cascading branches and deep burgundy foliage. Bred from a cross between ‘Covey’ (a weeping form) and ‘Forest Pansy’ (known for purple leaves), this small ornamental tree combines dramatic form with rich color throughout the growing season. It is especially suited for smaller gardens, courtyards, or focal-point plantings, offering early spring blooms of rosy-purple flowers before the foliage emerges.

As with its species parent, Cercis canadensis, ‘Ruby Falls’ thrives in well-drained soils and full sun to part shade. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5–9 and performs best with some protection from harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves in hotter regions. Though cultivated, it retains many of the pollinator-friendly traits of the wild redbud, offering an early-season nectar source for native bees.
