Description
Redvein enkianthus (Enkianthus campanulatus) is a refined, upright deciduous shrub native to the cool temperate woodlands of Japan. It is highly regarded for its tidy form, delicate bell-shaped flowers with subtle red venation, and vibrant fall foliage that ranges from orange to scarlet. Its restrained habit and layered branching structure make it a favorite for woodland borders and Japanese-style gardens, where it pairs well with ferns and shade-tolerant perennials. It thrives in acidic, well-drained soils and dappled sunlight, similar to other members of the heath family.
Slow-growing and long-lived, E. campanulatus is both deer-resistant and low-maintenance. Although not a heavy nectar source, its flowers provide modest support for pollinators early in the season. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5–7, where it benefits from shelter from strong afternoon sun and drying winds.
