Description
‘Purple Sensation’ is a striking ornamental onion known for its dense, spherical umbels of violet-purple florets held on tall, sturdy stems. Flowering in late spring, it bridges the gap between spring bulbs and early summer perennials, adding vertical interest and a bold pop of color to borders. Though sterile and propagated by bulb division, it naturalizes slowly and is deer- and rodent-resistant due to its pungent sulfur compounds.
This cultivar thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring drier summer conditions once its foliage dies back. Like many Allium species, it complements well in mixed plantings and is especially attractive to bees and early pollinators, which are drawn to its nectar-rich blooms.
