Description
Pink turtlehead (Chelone lyonii) is a robust, upright perennial native to the moist woodlands and streambanks of the southeastern United States. It gets its name from the hooded, snapdragon-like flowers that resemble the head of a turtle, blooming in late summer to early fall when many other perennials are winding down. The vibrant pink blossoms attract bumblebees and other late-season pollinators, while the plant’s glossy, toothed leaves stay tidy and upright throughout the growing season.
In the garden, C. lyonii thrives in moist, rich soil and part to full sun, making it especially valuable for rain gardens or borders with consistent moisture. It is adaptable to both naturalistic and formal settings and can tolerate heavier soils. Although it spreads gradually by rhizomes, it is easy to manage and pairs well with other moisture-loving natives, such as Joe Pye weed, cardinal flower, or ferns.
