Description
Disocactus ackermannii is a tropical, epiphytic cactus native to the cloud forests of southeastern Mexico. Unlike desert cacti, it has flattened, leaf-like stems that trail gracefully and produce spectacular crimson-red, funnel-shaped flowers in spring. The blooms, often up to 5 inches across, are unscented but visually striking, adapted to attract hummingbirds as primary pollinators. This species is prized as one of the true red-flowering epiphytic cacti and has contributed its vivid coloration to many orchid cactus hybrids.
In cultivation, it thrives in bright, filtered light with a coarse, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. It prefers even moisture during the growing season, with reduced watering in winter to encourage bud set. Often grown in hanging baskets, D. ackermannii benefits from high humidity and mild temperatures, reflecting the conditions of its native montane habitat.
