Description
‘Center Glow’ is a striking cultivar of ninebark valued for its layered foliage color, which emerges chartreuse and matures to burgundy. This upright, arching shrub is both ornamental and hardy, with exfoliating bark that peels in papery strips to reveal cinnamon-colored layers underneath—particularly appealing in winter gardens. In late spring to early summer, it bears small white or pinkish flowers in dense, rounded clusters, followed by reddish seed capsules that add interest in fall.
A hybrid of Physocarpus opulifolius and P. capitatus, ‘Center Glow’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates poor soils, drought, and urban stress. Its adaptability and pest resistance make it a good choice for low-maintenance hedges or background plantings. Native species of Physocarpus are found across North America, particularly in riparian and rocky habitats.
