Description
Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) is a large, suckering native viburnum that forms thickets in woodland edges, floodplains, and fencerows. It produces creamy white spring flowers in wide, flat-topped clusters, followed by deep blue-black berries on red stalks in fall—highly attractive to birds and small mammals. Its foliage turns rich red and purple in autumn, offering strong seasonal interest. The common name may refer to the fruit’s supposed appeal to nanny goats.
As a hardy species native to the northeastern and upper Midwestern United States, Viburnum lentago tolerates a range of soils and moisture conditions, including seasonally wet sites. It is often used in restoration plantings, naturalized borders, and wildlife-friendly hedgerows, where it provides food and cover for a variety of native species.
