Description

Red bistort (Bistorta amplexicaulis) is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial valued for its long-lasting vertical spires of crimson to deep pink flowers, which persist from midsummer well into fall. The blooms are rich in nectar and attract a steady stream of pollinators, especially bumblebees. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves form a dense ground cover that helps suppress weeds in borders or naturalistic settings.

Native to the eastern Himalayas and surrounding upland regions, Bistorta amplexicaulis thrives in consistently moist, well-drained soils and performs well in both sun and partial shade. Its ease of growth, extended flowering periods, and compatibility with matrix-style planting have made it increasingly popular in modern perennial gardens.
