Description
Mistletoe cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera) is an epiphytic cactus native to tropical and subtropical forests, where it grows not in deserts but in the filtered light of tree canopies. Its slender, pendent stems cascade over time, making it a striking choice for hanging baskets or as a trailing accent in shaded containers. Unlike most cacti, it thrives in humid conditions and requires regular moisture, although it should never be left in soggy soil.
Native to Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of tropical Africa and Sri Lanka (making it one of the only cacti with an Old World distribution), Rhipsalis baccifera prefers dappled shade and well-drained, organic-rich substrates. Tiny white flowers appear intermittently and are followed by small translucent berries that give the plant its common designation.
Bloom Time
Intermittent; most commonly late winter to early spring
