Description

Korean lilac (Syringa pubescens subsp. patula) is a compact, late-flowering lilac species prized for its profuse, fragrant bloom and excellent mildew resistance. Its smaller size and fine-textured foliage make it especially well-suited for foundation plantings and mixed borders. The soft lavender-purple flowers bloom slightly later than common lilacs and are highly attractive to butterflies and pollinators.

 

Native to the Korean Peninsula and parts of northeastern China, S. pubescens subsp. patula prefers full sun and well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. It benefits from light pruning just after flowering and is notably more tolerant of urban conditions and summer heat than many other traditional lilac varieties.
