Family

Amaryllidaceae

Description

Mediterranean bells (Nectaroscordum siculum) is a striking, bulbous perennial that adds unexpected architectural interest to late-spring borders. Its tall, slender stems support a loose cluster of pendulous, bell-shaped flowers in shades of creamy pink and green, each with a subtle twist. After blooming, the flower heads lift upright and dry in place, extending the plant’s visual interest well into summer. It is often left standing for its sculptural seed heads.

Native to rocky, sun-drenched slopes of southern Europe, especially the Balkans and Mediterranean basin, this plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It naturalizes easily when undisturbed and is avoided by deer and rodents due to its mildly onion-scented foliage, a reminder of its close relation to garlic.

Bloom Time

Late May to June
