Family

Magnoliaceae

Description

A member of the Little Girl series of hybrid magnolias, Jane magnolia is prized for its large, tulip-shaped flowers—rosy-purple on the outside and white within—that appear just as the threat of late frost begins to fade. Blooming slightly later than saucer magnolia, it avoids the damage that often plagues earlier-blooming varieties. The plant’s compact, rounded form and manageable size make it well-suited for foundation plantings, specimen use, or mixed borders.

A cross between Magnolia liliflora and Magnolia stellata, this hybrid was developed at the U.S. National Arboretum in the 1950s. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. Its broad, leathery foliage provides a clean backdrop through summer, and its adaptability to urban conditions has made it a popular choice for smaller landscapes.
