Family

Asteraceae

Description

A perennial cultivar of hybrid origin (Helianthus × laetiflorus), lemon queen sunflower is grown for its upright stature and profusion of soft yellow blooms that appear in late summer. The flowers provide abundant nectar and pollen, attracting native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects at a time when many other garden plants are fading. Its sturdy stems and branching habit make it well-suited to informal borders, prairie-style plantings, or pollinator gardens.

‘Lemon Queen’ descends from species native to central and eastern North America, including Helianthus tuberosus and H. mollis, and shares their preference for full sun and well-drained soils. It is tolerant of drought and poor soil once established, and may form substantial clumps over time if given space.
