Description

Japanese umbrella pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) is a rare and ancient conifer grown for its perfectly symmetrical form and glossy, dark green foliage that radiates in whorls like the spokes of an umbrella. It is the sole surviving member of its family, Sciadopityaceae, with fossil records dating back over 200 million years. Although slow-growing, it eventually forms a dense, upright pyramid, making it an exceptional specimen tree in well-drained, acidic soil.

Native to the cool, moist mountain forests of Japan, Sciadopitys verticillata prefers partial shade in youth but tolerates full sun once established. It resents heat and drought, making it better suited to sheltered sites in temperate regions. While not commonly planted due to its slow growth rate and high cost, it remains a prized curiosity among conifer collectors and garden designers seeking structural elegance.
