Description
Japanese hill cherry (Prunus serrulata) is a deciduous flowering tree cultivated for its graceful form and profuse spring blossoms, ranging from soft pink to white depending on the cultivar. Though many forms have been selected for ornamental use, the species type retains a natural elegance with upright branching and finely serrated leaves that turn vibrant shades of orange and bronze in autumn. It is typically short-lived but offers a striking seasonal display.
Native to hillsides and forest edges in Japan, Korea, and parts of China, P. serrulata thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. In cultivation, it benefits from protection against strong winds and thrives in temperate climates with consistent moisture and moderate humidity.
