Description

Imperial bromeliad (Alcantarea imperialis) is a giant terrestrial species native to rocky cliffs in southeastern Brazil. Grown primarily for its architectural form, it produces a bold rosette of leathery, upright leaves that can span over five feet across. While slow to mature, adult plants produce a dramatic, towering flower spike that may reach 8 to 10 feet in height and persist for several months. Even without bloom, the plant functions as a sculptural focal point in warm-climate or container gardens.

Native to the rocky cliffs of the Serra dos Órgãos mountains in southeastern Brazil, Alcantarea imperialis is adapted to exposed conditions, drought, and thin soils. It prefers full sun to bright indirect light, with excellent drainage and occasional deep watering. In warmer regions, it can be planted in-ground in sharply drained soils and is tolerant of drought once established.

Bloom Time

Irregular; blooms only once at maturity and often after several years
