Description
Hoary skullcap is a clump-forming native perennial with soft gray-green foliage and upright stems that produce bluish-purple flowers in late summer. Though not widely used in ornamental horticulture, it has strong potential in naturalistic and pollinator-focused plantings due to its drought tolerance, upright form, and long bloom period. The fine hairs on its foliage and stems provide a silvery cast, helping to deter browsing. It is well-suited for meadow edges, prairie-style borders, and other low-maintenance plantings where both visual texture and ecological function are priorities.
Native to dry woodlands, glades, and open slopes in eastern and central North America, Scutellaria incana thrives in full sun to light shade and lean, well-drained soils. It attracts a wide range of native bees and is rarely touched by deer or rabbits.
