Description
Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica) is a low, spreading native shrub valued for its adaptability and utility in difficult sites. It spreads by underground stems to form low, durable thickets that help stabilize banks and fill challenging edges. While its early spring flowers are modest, the plant earns its place through rich orange-red fall color, tolerance of harsh conditions, and foliage that releases a sharp, citrusy scent when bruised. In more formal areas, the compact ‘Gro-Low’ selection is favored for its reliable shape and weed-smothering density.
Native to dry woodlands and rocky slopes across eastern and central North America, Rhus aromatica thrives in full sun to part shade and resists drought, deer, and soil compaction. It’s especially useful at transitional edges—between paths and slopes, lawns and woodlands—where a native planting needs to hold its own.
