Family

Betulaceae

Description

This upright cultivar of European hornbeam is prized for its dense, narrowly columnar form that slowly broadens with age. The crisp, serrated foliage emerges bright green in spring and transitions to yellow in fall, often persisting into winter as dried, coppery leaves. Its strong architectural shape makes it a popular choice for formal hedging, allees, and vertical accents in structured garden designs.

Native to temperate woodlands of Europe and western Asia, Carpinus betulus thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soils and is tolerant of pruning, shade, and urban conditions. The cultivar ‘Fastigiata’ is often grafted onto a straight trunk and responds well to training, making it both a sculptural and functional element in landscape architecture.
