Description

Eurasian smoketree (Cotinus coggygria) is a drought-adapted shrub native to southern Europe and western Asia, grown for its wispy summer panicles that resemble clouds of smoke. It performs best in dry, low-fertility soils where stress enhances its vivid fall color. Pruning may reduce flowering; the most effective result is achieved when the plant is allowed to grow naturally.

In its native range, C. coggygria occurs on rocky, calcareous slopes and sun-exposed hillsides from the Mediterranean to western Asia. In cultivation, the plant favors well-drained soils and full sun exposure.
