Family

Fabaceae

Description

This striking cultivar of eastern redbud brings layered seasonal interest, beginning with bright pink spring blooms on bare branches followed by heart-shaped leaves that emerge burgundy and mature through tones of white, pink, and green. Its variegated foliage continues to draw attention well beyond bloom time, making it a standout ornamental tree for smaller landscapes. As with other redbuds, it performs best in well-drained soil and in full sun to partial shade.

A cultivated variety of the native Cercis canadensis, this tree traces its ancestry to the eastern and central U.S., particularly in woodland edges and limestone soils. Like other members of the legume family, it has the potential to form associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, though this is not as prominent as in many other Fabaceae members.
