Family

Pinaceae

Description

A cascading, architectural cultivar of the eastern hemlock, ‘Pendula’ is prized for its graceful, draping branches and softly textured needles. Unlike the upright wild type, this form hugs the ground or spills over walls and slopes, offering an elegant silhouette in shaded or woodland-style gardens. Native to the northeastern forests of North America, Tsuga canadensis is highly shade tolerant and prefers cool, moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter.

Although not a fast-growing cultivar, this variety rewards patient gardeners with a sculptural presence and adaptability to careful pruning. It serves well as a specimen plant, especially near water features or as a soft visual anchor in naturalistic designs.
