Family

Pinaceae

Description

This weeping form of the native eastern hemlock is distinguished by its long, pendulous branches and irregular, ground-hugging habit. It is often staked when young to encourage vertical height, allowing its branches to cascade downward in a dramatic, sculptural display. A shade-tolerant conifer, Tsuga canadensis ‘Pendula’ prefers cool, moist, acidic soils and thrives in woodland conditions, where its texture contrasts beautifully with broadleaf understory plants.

Though slow-growing, it rewards patient cultivation and careful siting with lasting elegance. In the garden, it functions as a soft focal point and performs well in naturalistic plantings, shaded slopes, or near water features.
