Description
‘October Skies’ is a compact, mound-forming cultivar of the native aromatic aster, known for its abundant sky-blue flowers that bloom prolifically in fall, often continuing until frost. Unlike many asters that can appear weedy or spindly, ‘October Skies’ maintains a tidy, bushy habit, making it ideal for borders, mass plantings, or naturalistic designs. Its narrow, aromatic foliage releases a balsam-like scent when brushed, lending the plant its common name. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and pollinator friendly, it provides a vital late-season nectar source for bees and migrating butterflies.
This cultivar is derived from Symphyotrichum oblongifolium, a species native to rocky prairies and open woodland of the central and eastern United States, where it thrives in well-drained, lean soils and full sun.
