Description
Arisaema ringens, commonly known as Japanese cobra lily, is a striking woodland aroid prized for its bold, sculptural presence and dramatic, hooded inflorescence. The glossy, trifoliate leaves emerge early in spring and are often as ornamental as the flower itself. The flower consists of a thick, coiled spadix partially enclosed by a deep purple-and-green striped spathe, resembling the hood of a cobra. Unlike many other Arisaema species, A. ringens has a low, spreading habit and forms long-lived, slowly expanding clumps in rich, shaded woodland soils.
Native to wooded slopes and shaded forest understories in Japan, Korea, and parts of China, Arisaema ringens prefers moist, humus-rich soils and protection from hot afternoon sun. It naturalizes well under deciduous trees and pairs beautifully with ferns, epimediums, and woodland peonies.
