Family

Fabaceae

Description

‘Amethyst Falls’ is a compact, refined cultivar of American wisteria that offers the romantic appeal of wisteria vines without the aggressive growth habit of its Asian relatives. It produces cascades of fragrant, lavender-purple flowers on new wood, making it easier to control and reliably reblooming. Well-suited for trellises, arbors, and containers, this cultivar thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soils, tolerating a range of conditions once established. Unlike Asian wisterias, it does not strangle structures or trees, making it a more garden-friendly choice.

Native to the southeastern United States, Wisteria frutescens typically grows along riverbanks, forest edges, and moist woodlands, where it twines through shrubs and trees. ‘Amethyst Falls’ retains this adaptability but with a more compact form, making it ideal for both native plant gardens and ornamental settings.

Bloom Time

May to June (lightly reblooming in late summer)
