Description

‘Sensation’ is a striking cultivar of the common lilac, valued for its dramatic bicolor flowers—deep purple petals edged in white. Like the species, it is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub with a strong upright habit and heavily fragrant blooms in late spring. Reaching 8–10 feet tall, it is ideal for mixed borders, screening, or as a standalone specimen. Although of European origin, common lilac and its cultivars are widely planted in temperate gardens across North America, particularly in colder climates where their hardiness (USDA Zones 3–7) and nostalgic fragrance are highly valued.

This cultivar prefers full sun and well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Regular deadheading and annual thinning help maintain bloom quality and air circulation, minimizing the risk of powdery mildew. ‘Sensation’ attracts butterflies and other pollinators, and its flowers make excellent cut stems.
