Description

Japanese wood poppy (Glaucidium palmatum) is a rare and redefined woodland perennial admired for its soft lavender to pinkish flowers, deeply lobed palmate foliage, and elegant upright habit. Blooming in mid to late spring, it evokes the form and texture of an herbaceous tree peony, but it is better suited to shade. It’s large, solitary flowers nod slightly above the foliage and are followed by ornamental seed heads that resemble miniature anemone fruits.

Endemic to the cool, mountainous woodlands of northern Japan, G. palmatum prefers dappled light, humus-rich soil, and consistent moisture. Though slow to establish and sensitive to heat, it rewards patience with long-lived beauty and a serene, architectural presence in the shade garden. Often considered a collector’s plant, it pairs well with ferns, trilliums, and other refined spring ephemerals.
