Description
‘Miss Manners’ is a compact, well-behaved cultivar of obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana), named for its unique characteristic: individual flower spikes can be bent and will often stay in the position you place them—hence “obedient.” Unlike the species, which is known for its aggressive spreading, this selection remains tidy and upright, making it a better choice for smaller borders or more formal beds. The crisp white flowers appear on strong stems in late summer and attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Native to moist meadows and streambanks of eastern North America, Physostegia virginiana thrives in full sun with moderately rich, moist soils. ‘Miss Manners’ performs reliably in average garden settings without becoming invasive and offers a clean vertical accent in perennial plantings. It is especially valued for blooming when few other upright perennials are in peak flower.
