Description

Shredded umbrella plant (Syneilesis aconitifolia) is a striking herbaceous perennial native to the forested slopes of East Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan. Emerging in spring as silky, silver-haired shoots, its foliage quickly unfurls into finely divided, umbrella-like leaves that lend a sculptural quality to shade gardens. Though its late-summer flower heads are modest and tufted, the plant is grown primarily for its architectural texture and graceful, slow-spreading clumps. It thrives in moist, humus-rich soil with partial shade and performs best in sheltered woodland settings or shaded borders.

Syneilesis aconitifolia is hardy in USDA Zones 4–8 and spreads by short underground rhizomes, making it a manageable choice for naturalistic plantings. It pairs well with ferns, woodland grasses, and other shade-loving perennials.
