Description
Roger’s flower (Rodgersia pinnata) is a bold, architectural perennial native to moist mountain valleys in western China. Valued for its large, textured, palmate leaves and tall plumes of creamy white to pinkish-red flowers, it lends a dramatic, almost tropical feel to shade gardens and waterside plantings. It prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soils and partial shade, where it can gradually form striking colonies. In garden settings, cultivars like ‘Superba’ are favored for their strong flower color and lush foliage.
Despite its commanding presence, Roger’s flower is surprisingly hardy (USDA Zones 5–7) and can tolerate brief periods of sun if soil moisture is maintained. It is relatively unbothered by pests and deer, and its late-season blooms offer nectar for bees and other pollinators during midsummer lulls.
