Description
Bear’s breeches (Acanthus mollis) is a bold architectural perennial valued for its deeply loved, glossy green leaves and tall flower spikes adorned with hooded white blooms enclosed by purple or pinkish bracts. Native to the Mediterranean region, it thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soils and is best suited for sunny borders or dry garden settings. Its sculptural foliage is said to have inspired the classical Corinthian column capitals in Greek and Roman architecture, making it as culturally significant as it is ornamental.
Though often grown as a decorative plant, A. mollis can form large clumps over time and is surprisingly drought-tolerant once established. It may need protection in colder climates, where heavy mulching can help prevent winter damage.
