Description
Rue-anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) is a delicate spring ephemeral with thread-thin stems and delicately divided foliage that resembles meadow rue in miniature. It naturalizes gently in woodland gardens where leaf litter is undisturbed and soil is rich in organic matter. While sensitive to excessive competition or disturbance, it reliably returns each spring when conditions remain stable. Its dormancy by early summer makes it a worthy companion for later-emerging perennials or groundcovers such as wild ginger or woodland phlox.
Native to eastern North America, T. thalictroides occurs in deciduous woodlands from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. It is best suited to shaded sites with loose, well-drained soils and minimal root disturbance.
