Description

This cheery bright red spring flowering member of the buttercup family is found throughout the eastern U.S. growing on rocky outcrops and dry shallow soil.  It is a favorite flower of hummingbirds as it provides an early spring source of nectar to early arrivals. The Columbine has an unusual flower structure that can only be pollinated by a few species like hummingbirds, bumblebees and other long tongued insects like the hummingbird hawk moth.
