Paeoniaceae
Description
Woodland peony (Paeonia obovata) is a rare herbaceous species valued as much for its adaptability to shade and woodland soils as for its fleeting spring bloom—often receiving the most inquiries during spring garden tours. Unlike most peonies, it tolerates dappled light and humus-rich understory conditions, making it particularly useful in naturalistic shade gardens. Its deeply lobed foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, and its late summer seed capsules—often splitting open to reveal glossy black and crimson seeds—offer ornamental interest well after flowering has passed.
Native to forested regions of East Asia, Paeonia obovata prefers well-drained, moisture-retentive soils with protection from harsh afternoon sun. Though slower to establish than common garden peonies, it is long-lived and requires little intervention once settled.
