Description

Redbud is a small, deciduous understory tree native to eastern and central North America, celebrated for its early spring display of vivid pink to lavender pea-like flowers that emerge directly from its branches and trunk—a phenomenon known as cauliflory. The heart-shaped leaves follow soon after, transitioning to yellow in autumn. It is frequently planted in residential landscapes, woodland edges, and pollinator gardens, where its modest size, showy bloom, and adaptability are valued. Cultivars such as ‘Forest Pansy’ and ‘Appalachian Red’ expand their ornamental range with varied foliage and flower color.

Cercis canadensis thrives in well-drained soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions, including light shade and clay soils. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 and supports a wide array of pollinators, especially early-season native bees. Its seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals, and it serves as a host plant for the Henry’s Elfin butterfly.
